Tooth Removal & Extractions

Tooth extractions and removals can be nerve racking if you’re not completely sure of the process. At Polished Dentistry, our dentists work to make sure you are educated and aware of the removal procedure so you feel more at ease.

Extraction

Tooth extraction, or “getting a tooth pulled”, is simply the removal of a tooth by a dental professional. This is a very common procedure that many of our patients have undergone.

Reasons for Extraction

There are a few reasons someone may need to get a tooth extracted.

  • Gum disease called periodontitis
  • To prepare for braces or orthodontic work
  • A tooth that is positioned the wrong way and could cause tooth crowding issues or damage to other teeth
  • An impacted tooth that cannot properly emerge through the gums
  • Broken tooth that cannot be repaired
  • A heavily decayed tooth

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars located all the way in the back of the mouth, on the top and bottom that usually erupt through the gums around ages 15-25. Wisdom teeth typically emerge fully and straight when one has enough room in their mouth.

However, sometimes wisdom teeth need to be removed to prevent other problems with surrounding teeth, such as crowding issues. The wisdom teeth may also need to be removed if they only partially erupt through the gums, which may cause plaque accumulation and tooth decay because they are difficult to clean.

What to Expect When Having a Tooth Extraction

At Polished Dentistry, our goal is to make you feel as comfortable as possible during your extraction. Anesthesia and other forms of sedation are options that can be used during tooth or wisdom tooth extraction procedures. These procedures do not take long to complete. After your extraction, our dentists will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your teeth. You will want to make sure you are following the proper hygiene directions for your mouth to heal properly.

Alternatives to Tooth Extraction

Extraction may not be your first choice, but sometimes it is the best option. However, our staff will go over all possible options to see what is right fit for you.

There may be an alternative, such as a repair of a tooth instead of extraction. You may also be recommended an implant, bridge, or partial denture if you end up choosing a tooth extraction.
